Several vendors at this year’s New York International Gift Fair carried soaps from Aleppo, Syria. Soap making in Aleppo dates back to antiquity and was introduced to Europe in the 12th century.

Commentary: The soaps are known in French as Pain d’Alep (bread of Aleppo) — which works as a double-entendre for the “pain” being suffered by the people of Aleppo and the rest of Syria, because of terrorism from Saudia Arabia, France, Israel and the US.
