‘New Yorkers Against Gun Violence’

NYAGV042013dLeah Gunn Barrett, Executive Director, of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) with Senator Charles Schumer at a rally in Manhattan today.

NYAGV seeks restrictive gun laws in New York, in the belief that they will curb gun violence. Much like the pro-life movement seeks to restrict abortions.

It brings to mind the similarity between the NRA and NARAL.

Americans consider their freedoms to be absolute. For some it’s about their body; for others it’s their gun. Both are born out of a closed metaphysical (materialist) account of the human person — that is selfish, immature and ultimately violent. The resulting incoherence can be seen in those who oppose abortion but have no problem with unfettered access to assault rifles, and those who want to restrict assault rifles but have no problem with unfettered access to abortions. Materialists, especially those in Washington, tend to want to control others but usually can’t control themselves.
